Test Ipsum on a staging copy before considering a production theme switch. A clean demo page cannot tell you whether your existing templates, navigation, forms and content will remain usable.
What Ipsum is today
WordPress introduced Ipsum as the proposed default theme planned for WordPress 7.2. The announcement describes a minimal blogging design and moves away from year-based theme names. It is available for testing through the linked project repository. As of this October 17 review, treat the proposal and development build separately from a final bundled release. Do not replace a working production theme merely because a future release is planned.
Preserve the baseline you will need for rollback
Record the active theme and child theme, exported customizations, navigation assignments, custom CSS and any templates edited through the Site Editor. Take a recoverable backup of both database and files. A theme zip alone does not preserve every customization.
Choose five real content shapes for the comparison: a long article, an image-heavy article, a category archive with pagination, a search result and a contact or sales page. Include a post with long words, a table, captions and an embedded form. Use synthetic submissions and disable live customer notifications on staging.
Content: No missing body or captions. Navigation: Menu and archive links work. Business: Test form reaches test destination. Search: Canonical and metadata preserved. Explanatory checklist, not a customer test result.
Run the migration test in passes
Content pass: Check that the article title, author, dates, body, featured image and captions remain present. Inspect long code blocks and wide tables at phone width. Missing decoration is different from missing content.
Navigation pass: Test the logo link, mobile menu, category navigation, next page and footer links with mouse and keyboard. Make sure a visible label still points to its intended destination.
Business pass: Submit a test form, verify the confirmation and confirm that the synthetic record reaches its intended test destination. Inspect tracking under the site's approved consent settings. Do not assume a theme switch preserves scripts placed in the old theme.
Search pass: Compare canonical URLs, title tags, descriptions and structured data on the chosen fixtures. A design change should not silently turn a public article into an empty template or noindex page.
Decide what must move out of the old theme

Will the content still be registered? |
| Tracking inserted in theme files |
What owns the script after the change? |
| Theme-specific shortcodes |
Is there a maintained replacement? |
| Customized template |
Is it theme-bound or reusable? |
| Form styling |
Does submission still work without it? |
For broader release preparation, see WordPress 7.2 staging checks before beta. Keep theme evaluation and core upgrade as separate changes so you can identify which one introduced a regression.
Release and rollback decision
Use a written go/no-go list. Missing checkout, forms, navigation or primary content is a stop condition. Cosmetic differences can be reviewed deliberately, but should not be confused with a passing functional test. Rehearse returning to the previous theme and verify its configuration before scheduling any production change.
Request help with a WordPress theme problem and share the fixture list rather than a vague description that the design looks different.
