A Gravity Forms upload can have an allowed filename extension and still fail validation. Check the actual file format, field restrictions and response before adding another allowed extension. Renaming a file does not convert its contents.
Identify which check rejected the upload
Save the exact error text, form ID, field ID, filename extension and file size. Use a harmless synthetic document, not a customer contract. Note whether the message appears immediately after selection or after the server receives the upload.
The File Upload field documentation distinguishes file count, size and type validation. A server or firewall rejection can happen before these checks. An HTML error page or HTTP 413 should not be treated as a MIME mismatch.

Compare two files without weakening the form
Create a small document in a trusted application and export it using the format the form is intended to accept. Test that file and a sanitized reproduction of the failing file on the same staging form. Keep size and extension comparable.
Inspect file properties locally. On a machine with the file utility, this read-only check provides a clue:
file --mime-type ./sample-document.pdf
The result is not a malware scan and may differ from the server's detector. A PDF-looking filename with HTML contents may be a downloaded login page. Open only files you trust, and do not upload private documents to public MIME-checking websites.
Valid file: Accepted by intended field. Wrong type: Still rejected. Entry: Correct file attached. Storage: Access rules preserved. Explanatory checklist, not a customer test result.
Repair the narrow mismatch
If the source application exported the wrong format, export again using the supported format. If the field unintentionally excludes a required type, have the form owner approve the smallest necessary allowlist change. Retest rejection of a clearly disallowed harmless fixture as well as acceptance of the valid document.
When only one legitimate format fails across several trusted exports, ask the host to compare PHP file detection, WordPress validation and installed upload filters. The permitted-type reference explains the layered restrictions; historical examples there are not proof that every current DOCX file is broken.
Do not disable file-type verification globally or enable unrestricted uploads to silence the message. A successful upload must also land in the intended storage and remain subject to the right access controls.
Verify the complete submission
Submit the corrected synthetic file, confirm the entry and download behavior, then remove the test data through the normal retention process. For storage and quarantine decisions, use the Gravity Forms upload-security checklist. HandL WP can investigate rejected uploads using the error, redacted response and a safe sample.
