A 410 response from /wp-json/woocommerce/mcp on WooCommerce 11.3 is an announced endpoint removal, not a reason to disable the firewall. The migration changes the MCP server, authentication and available ability names. Prepare it on staging before upgrading a store that depends on an AI assistant or operations integration.
Confirm the Version and Exact Request
WooCommerce's October 21 advisory says 11.3 removes the legacy route and returns HTTP 410 with migration guidance. The replacement uses the WordPress MCP Adapter plugin, a WordPress username and application password, and /wp-json/mcp/mcp-adapter-default-server. The old WooCommerce REST API key is not the replacement credential. These are announced 11.3 changes; the release list checked October 25 still identifies 11.2.1 as stable.
Record the installed WooCommerce version, configured URL, client name and response status. Read the response body after removing private details. A generic host error, HTML login page or failed TLS connection is different from the documented JSON-RPC response. Do not diagnose every connection problem as this migration.
Create a small inventory of clients before changing credentials. Include desktop assistants, scheduled jobs, agency tools and integrations that an employee configured months ago. For each, record an owner and the business task it performs. Keep secrets in the approved credential store, not the inventory spreadsheet.
Connection migration changes both the server route and credential type. Confirm tool names separately. Explanatory diagram, not a customer test.
Move One Client on Staging
Clone the relevant configuration into an isolated test site with synthetic orders and products. Keep outgoing email, payment activity and external fulfillment disabled through the established staging controls. The staging site must not share a live automation credential simply because its database was copied.
Have an authorized administrator install and activate the official MCP Adapter plugin. Create a dedicated user with only the capabilities needed for the planned work, then issue its application password. A separate password makes revocation manageable, but it does not by itself narrow the user's capabilities. Review the user role as well.
Update one client's endpoint and authentication together. Check its documentation for how username and application password are supplied. Do not paste the password into a URL, shared screenshot, shell history or support ticket. If the client cannot use the supported authentication, stop and confirm compatibility rather than adding an insecure bridge.
Rebuild the Tool Inventory
The advisory also removes legacy REST-derived abilities and old endpoint-specific filters. A successful connection therefore does not establish that a saved workflow still calls the right tool. Export or record the newly discovered tools and compare them with the actions the client actually needs.
Use the following acceptance worksheet. The examples are proposed tests, not results measured on a customer store.
| Test |
Passing evidence |
Stop condition |
| Connect with intended user |
Authenticated tool discovery |
Only administrator credentials work |
| Read a synthetic product |
Correct ID and expected fields |
Wrong store or excessive private data |
| Read a permitted order |
Only approved scope returned |
Unexpected customer data exposure |
| Attempt a prohibited action |
Access denied without a change |
Mutation succeeds unexpectedly |
| Revoke the test password |
Subsequent authenticated request fails |
Client still has another working credential |
For any authorized write test, record before and after values on a disposable object. Ask for a single explicit change, then inspect the stored result independently. Do not use a production refund, order deletion or customer email as a connectivity test. A client saying it completed a task is not the same as a persisted result.
Retire Old Credentials Without Breaking Other Jobs
Before revoking a WooCommerce key, identify every consumer. A key created only for the removed MCP endpoint can be retired after migration, but a reused key may also serve an ERP or reporting job. Separate those consumers first and coordinate the change with their owners.
Keep a dated change record containing the new route, credential owner, approved operations and test outcomes. Do not include the secret itself. Remove obsolete client configurations so a later operator does not restore the retired endpoint while troubleshooting an unrelated error.
If an extension depends on adapter classes or old filters, assign that compatibility check to its developer. Client configuration cannot repair extension code that relies on a removed integration path. Use the abilities permission checklist to review exposure and the store-owner setup guide for the access plan.
Finish With a Business Task
After the authorized production change, run the smallest approved read-only task that proves the integration is useful. Confirm the store identity, object ID and data scope, then monitor the next scheduled job. Keep a way to disable the client without disabling the storefront.
HandL WP can review the integration migration when the connection works but tools disappear, permissions broaden or an extension fails. Bring the redacted route/status evidence and old-versus-new tool inventory. Do not send passwords or customer exports.
