The WordPress theme missing style.css error often means the uploaded ZIP is not the installable theme package. It may be a bundle containing documentation and another ZIP, a plugin, or a non-WordPress template. Inspect the package before creating an empty stylesheet or uploading files manually.
Confirm what you purchased or downloaded
Return to the vendor's official download area and identify the product type. A website template, Elementor kit, plugin, and WordPress theme use different installation workflows. Similar preview designs do not make their packages interchangeable.
If account access or updates are unavailable, resolve that through the vendor. Do not substitute a modified package from an unofficial download site. Our expired plugin license guide distinguishes entitlement problems from runtime failures.
Inspect the archive without executing it
Open the downloaded ZIP locally with an archive viewer. Look at its top-level contents. A documentation folder, license file, and nested theme-name.zip usually indicate an outer distribution bundle. Read the included vendor installation directions and select the actual installable archive.
A theme's stylesheet belongs at the theme root. This is the useful shape to look for, not a complete list of required theme files:
theme-name/
style.css
functions.php
templates-or-other-theme-files
The exact template requirements differ by theme type. A folder containing HTML demos and an assets directory is not automatically a WordPress theme. Also distinguish a ZIP downloaded from a source repository from the vendor's packaged release; some projects require a build step.
Product type: Theme, plugin, kit, or HTML template?. Trusted package: Download from the official vendor. Theme root: Check style.css location and metadata. Dependencies: Required parent and compatible components. Explanatory checklist, not a customer test result.
Do not fix the error with a dummy file
Adding an empty style.css may hide one symptom while leaving the package invalid. WordPress uses the stylesheet header to identify theme information. Renaming an unrelated CSS file does not create the expected theme structure or metadata.
If the file exists, check its location and readable header. An extra directory level inside the ZIP can put it somewhere WordPress does not expect. Compare the archive with a fresh official download before making manual changes.
For a child theme, confirm the required parent theme is installed and that the child's Template header identifies the correct parent directory. A missing parent is a separate dependency problem. Do not overwrite a customized child theme with a fresh parent package.
Install safely and keep the current theme available
Test the corrected archive on staging. Installing and activating are separate decisions: activation can change headers, menus, widgets, and template output. Keep a backup and the currently working theme available until the new theme passes review.
Check the homepage, a post, navigation, responsive layout, and business-critical forms. If the theme depends on bundled plugins, obtain those from the trusted vendor workflow and verify their compatibility rather than activating every optional component automatically.
What to send the vendor
Provide the exact error, product name, package filename, download date, and a screenshot of the archive's folder structure. Do not send purchase credentials or a full production backup. Ask for the installable WordPress package and any required parent-theme version.
HandL WP can review a failed theme installation while preserving the current site and its customizations.
