An expired WordPress plugin license does not have one universal outcome. Installed code, update downloads, vendor support, and connected cloud services can follow different policies. Read the policy for the exact product and test its important workflow before assuming the plugin either stopped working or remains safe indefinitely.
A site can look normal while losing access to security updates. Conversely, a broken form can have a mail or integration failure unrelated to the expiry notice. Keep entitlement diagnosis separate from functional troubleshooting.
Identify the Product and License Owner
Record the vendor, plugin edition, installed version, add-ons, account owner, registered domain, and expiration date. Determine whether the license belongs to the business, a former agency, or a bundled theme package.
Do not paste the full key into a ticket or shared spreadsheet. A record that names the secure storage location and responsible account owner is enough for operational tracking.
An illustrative handoff problem is a business that owns its domain but uses an agency's form-plugin subscription. Buying another key may be the correct path, but first establish which add-ons and sites require coverage and whether the original agreement allows transfer.
Read the Vendor's Current Expiry Policy
As one specific example, Gravity Forms documents that installed first-party products continue operating after expiry, while updates, support, downloads, and new-site registration are restricted. It also warns that continued operation is not guaranteed indefinitely. That policy must not be generalized to every WordPress plugin or external service.
Separate these questions:
- Does the installed feature run without contacting a licensed service?
- Can this account download the current security release?
- Do add-ons have separate entitlements or subscriptions?
- Can the license be activated on a replacement or restored site?
- Does a hosted service have its own quota, renewal, or retention policy?

Check a Real Workflow Without Changing Everything
Test a controlled form submission, checkout, booking, or export appropriate to the plugin. Record the result at the receiving system. A dashboard banner disappearing is not proof that the workflow works.
If updates are unavailable, distinguish expiry from an unregistered domain, account mismatch, blocked vendor request, or a bundled-license arrangement. For an Avada-specific problem, use the Fusion Patcher and registration guide, which remains the owner for that troubleshooting task.
Do not use unofficial download mirrors to avoid renewal. Obtain packages from the vendor or another authorized distribution path. If a security fix is needed urgently and no legitimate update path is available, evaluate containment or replacement with the site owner.
Choose Renewal, Replacement, or Retirement
Renew when the feature remains necessary and the vendor-supported path fits the business. For replacement, inventory saved data, shortcodes, templates, integrations, and ongoing jobs before removing the old plugin. Exporting settings is not always a full migration of entries or external state.
For retirement, confirm that no public page, scheduled task, or business process still depends on the plugin. Preserve required records according to the business's retention policy. Do not delete a plugin simply to remove an expiration warning.
Add the decision and renewal owner to the maintenance handoff register. Follow the risk-based update schedule once update access is restored. HandL WP can investigate a blocked update or broken dependency without treating every license warning as the same technical problem.
